Danny Haidar
Danny's job is to build freedom into the infrastructure of the web using a pocket-sized private server called "FreedomBox." These private servers are designed to create and protect freedom on the internet using a bundle of software packed inside one small, inexpensive box running 100% free and open source software. FreedomBox is an immensely flexible and secure private server system designed to enable regular people to host their own internet services, like encrypted messengers, a VoIP server, websites, VPN, a metasearch engine, and much more.
As Vice President for Product and Development of the FreedomBox Foundation, Danny works with communities to implement FreedomBox, communicates the needs of users to FreedomBox software developers, and works with partners to distribute FreedomBoxes. In his work, he draws on his wide-ranging professional experiences, which include communications for a congressional campaign, IT for a public school district, constituent services for a U.S. congressional district office, and social services at homeless and refugee shelters. Danny earned his B.A. in philosophy, political science, and linguistics from Columbia University. He wants to use free and open source software to create and protect freedom in the 21st century.
